Number Lines
We are working on ordering numbers to 1000 on a number line. We created an anchor chart today describing how to represent numbers on a number line.
The students decided that the following steps are necessary when placing a number on a number line.
1) Identify the pattern on the number line. The pattern could be increasing by 1,2,5,10, 25, 50, 100, or 1000.
2) Place the number on the number line by skip counting.
3) If there is no line (marker) on the number line for the number that you are placing on the line you need to add a marker to identify the number's place on the line.
We played a game on the iPad today and the students were very engaged! It is a great way to practice placing numbers on a number line. It will help to build automaticity in comparing numbers. It will help children at all levels of ordering numbers (i.e., 2 digit numbers to working with decimals).
