Data Management
We have been working on graphing for the past few weeks. During the Olympics each student created an inquiry question to research throughout the 16 days of the Olympics.
Once they decided on their question they collected data every few days. Once all the data was collected they had to decide on which graph they would choose to use to display their data. The graphs included horizontal bar graphs, vertical bar graphs, double bar graph, triple bar graph, pictographs, and line graphs.
We created the success criteria for graphing as a whole class. They used the success criteria to create a rough copy of their graph. Each child had a student-teacher conference to discuss their graph and to identify and justify the strengths and areas of improvement on their graph. The students then created a final copy of their graph.
We have also discussed the purpose of graphing and managing data. The students are able to read various graphs and interpret the data.
We are now working on IDENTIFYING AND JUSTIFYING the mode of their data. They conducted a survey and gathered data from their peers. They put the data into a Google spreadsheet and created a digital graph of their choice. They then, uploaded the chart into their kidblog website and participated in conversations about the mode of the data.
Please take a look at our kidblog to see their wonderful discussions. They have developed a great understanding of the difference between IDENTIFYING and JUSTIFYING. They understand that identifying is surface level and that justifying their opinion is deeper.
