Data Management
We have started our Olympic graphing inquiry. The students have chosen a topic they would like to follow during the Olympics. Some topics include; how many goals have been scored by each team in hockey, how many medals has Canada won each day, how many athletes per country, and how many events per sport. The students use the iPads and iPad minis to collect data and record the data in a tally chart.
We are discussing various graphs and how to organize the data we are collecting. Some of the success criteria for graphing includes; title, vertical axis, horizontal axis, labels on each axis, legend (if needed). We will post our co-constructed success criteria chart soon.
To further our understanding of graphing we will not only be creating graphs but will be interpreting graphs. If you come across graphs at home please feel free to discuss the data in the graph and compare the different categories. You may also bring in graphs that you find in magazines and newspapers.
Some questions to guide your graphing discussions include:
- What story does this graph tell?
- What can you infer from the information in the graph?
Below are a few links to learn360 graphing videos. The first 3 are short videos and the last one is a 20 minute video. They are not mandatory to watch at home but feel free to include them as part of your math discussion.
To get into learn 360 and watch the movies, students need to use the login information that will be in their agendas tomorrow.
