November
Over the past two months the grade 2/3 class has been working on being kind and considerate towards others. In this class, as I am sure you are well aware, the students can earn 'MOOSE MONEY' for acts of kindness, independent work, and cooperation with others. With the money the students are able to go shopping for themselves in the treasure box. This month, in preparation for the Christmas season and to help support our Gospel Value of Community, the students will be earning red 'MOOSE MONEY' that will be displayed on our Giving Tree wall. I will match the money earned to either purchase presents for children in need in our community or we will adopt an endangered animal.
(Language) The students have been researching various endangered animals and will be writing descriptive paragraphs explaining why the animal is endangered and why we should help that animal. We have been using the QR codes and the class iPads to help with the research process.
(Math) We are starting to look at addition and subtraction through words problems. The strategies that we have been using are making 10, doubles, and doubles and their neighbours. The students are becoming more and more comfortable with adding and describing their strategies. I encourage you and your family to talk about addition and subtraction in everyday situations and discuss how they can find the SUM or the DIFFERENCE in various problems (i.e., There are 9 pairs of shoes at the door how many shoes in total? There are 18 shoes in total. I know this because I doubled the number 9 and that is 18.) I am encouraging the students to say their answers in full sentences and explain how they know the answer.
(Science) We are in the middle of our science units on animals (gr. 2) and plants (gr. 3). We will be creating our murals very soon so stay tuned.
